Disaster Preparedness and Resilience

Chemonics delivers disaster preparedness services by partnering with communities and all levels of government to enhance their resilience, planning skills, and operations. Our comprehensive approach ensures that communities are better prepared to handle crises – reducing vulnerabilities and promoting sustainable development.

Data and Early Warning Systems

Data and Early Warning Systems

We empower partners with advanced data ahead of crises.

Chemonics establishes and manages early warning, geographical information, and other data and monitoring systems to prevent disasters and mitigate their harmful impacts. We support decision-makers, emergency responders, and resilience actors to collect, analyze, and use data to inform policies, emergency operations, physical fortifications, and strategic communications before a critical event occurs.

Strategic Planning and Training for Resilience

We help communities better prepare to mitigate the impacts of disasters.

Chemonics provides capacity building services to enhance the planning and preparedness skills of communities and local, state, and national governments. We support the development of disaster risk reduction strategies, advise on scenario planning and tabletop exercises, and strengthen open exchange of information between local and national disaster response and preparedness institutions.

Procurement for Preparedness

We strengthen communities’ access to the resources they need for resilience.

Chemonics’ robust supply chain operations capabilities allow us to provide direct support for preparedness procurements. We work closely with partners to align data and strategic planning with operational needs and support the procurement and installation of winterization equipment, heating, drainage, and other resilience infrastructure.

Strategic Communications and Citizen Outreach

We tailor communications and outreach to stakeholder needs.

Chemonics advises public sector and community partners on best practices for effectively communicating resilience and disaster preparedness strategies and tactics. We host and strengthen community dialogue mechanisms to reduce drivers of conflict and instability. We support the development of social media, print, radio, short- and long-form video, and television content and programming to support social cohesion, community preparedness, and personal disaster planning. We create content for diverse audiences including youth, frontline communities, farmers, and others to be better equipped with the information they need to secure their futures.

An Early Warning System to Detect and Prevent Famines Worldwide

With more areas than ever facing food insecurity, having a proven, internationally-accepted method of analyzing and predicting famine helps deploy resources where they need to be, in time to save lives. Since 2000, Chemonics has implemented the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), a global network of data collectors who monitor market conditions and raise awareness for where famine may strike next.
