Digital Transaction of Carbon Credits

Carbon markets are an important tool in combating the climate crisis. And digital technology is here to help! But what does this look like in practice? Can we leverage blockchain to address issues at the heart of carbon markets, including traceability and transparency? What of the energy needs required to power the blockchain backbone? ClimateTech specialists in Latin America – a carbon credit project developer, a carbon market technology start-up, and an international standard-setting organization – discuss how they are navigating both the opportunities and the challenges to applying new technologies in the digital transaction of carbon credits. 

Burka Avenger! Super Heroes with Super Powers

Superheroes wear cloaks. Superheroes wear masks. And Pakistani superhero Jiya even dons a burqa to transform into a passionate defender of girls’ right to education. Launched in 2013, the Burka Avenger animated series centers around a much-loved female superhero who is a passionate advocate for girls’ education. It uses arresting visuals and vivid colors to synthesize complex information into digestible stories. This conversation will explore the sociopolitical context that gives birth to superheroes, the energy that keeps them going, and the power of animated storytelling to bring about social change 

CBDCs are Going Global

Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) are digital versions of money issued by governments with central bank trust at their core. From Australia to Ukraine, more than a hundred CBDCs are currently in either research, development, or testing phase with a handful like the Bahamian Sand Dollar, the Jamaican Jam-DEX, and the Nigerian eNaira already in circulation. What regulatory, interoperability, and trust challenges are the CBDCs encountering? Join us as we look at the CBDC ecosystem, how countries are getting digital currencies into virtual wallets, and examine the Philippines’ approach to e-currencies
