Strengthening Educational Performance – Up Zambia Program

Project Dates: December 2011 - December 2016
Improving literacy among Zambia’s children is necessary to improve their financial futures and the country’s achievements.

Zambia has increased access to early grade education during the past decade, yet the quality of that education still requires significant improvement. Students’ test scores are low across the country, particularly in literacy. The USAID Strengthening Educational Performance – Up (STEP-Up) Zambia program worked with the government to improve literacy across the country and streamline the management of the country’s education system. STEP-Up Zambia strengthened decision-making procedures, improved the allocation of resources, created annual performance targets, and promoted equity as a central theme in policy development and education management reform.
