Business development professionals | DFID | UK | 2019

Chemonics seeks business development professionals to join the United Kingdom division. Anticipated portfolios for our New Business Managers may include but are not limited to East Africa, West Africa, and a Global portfolio and will be based on the profiles of successful candidates and corporate needs. The new business managers will provide support to new business strategy and development efforts including participation on proposal teams focusing specifically on UK-based donors, such as DFID and FCO. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Initiate and develop effective working relationships with clients, potential partners, counterparts, stakeholders, subcontractors, technical specialists, and donor agencies
  • Identify and develop new business leads, clearly identifying Chemonics’ role in current international development assistance programs and trends
  • Externally promote Chemonics, representing company history, values, and standards by attending events, networking with clients and counterparts, and displaying a clear understanding of the past and present portfolio
  • Collaborate with regional operations team to properly resource new business teams within and outside of region or profit center
  • Ensure Corporate Proposal Tracker is consistently and accurately updated
  • Oversee management of new business consultants, including timesheet management and ensuring payments are processed for consultants
  • Develop and supervise implementation of proposal strategies in collaboration with senior vice president and director of new business development to optimize profitability and win rate
  • Act in a variety of proposal leadership roles to ensure that Chemonics’ best practices and quality standards are followed during preparation and submission
  • Apply knowledge of indirect cost rates to provide early estimates of proposal profitability, prepares cost proposals independently and in compliance with Chemonics’ standards, and mentors others in such tasks
  • Learn and promote strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development and cultivates collaborative working relationships across the company
  • Actively engage in technical practice of relevance to areas of interest or focus, sharing information and best practices learned with the company
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate assigned staff
  • Provide organizational, planning, and management support to outside facilitators and undergo training to serve as in-house facilitator for meetings such as green teams and new business training
  • Expand professional and technical knowledge through a variety of internal and external training and resources
  • Foster and demonstrate a workplace inclusive of creating opportunity, serving others, building trust, innovation, and exceeding expectations


  • Relevant professional work experience and staff supervisory experience, experience with DFID preferred
  • Degree in relevant subject or equivalent work experience required; Advanced degree preferred
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding of UK donor client requirements and preferred methods of business
  • Understanding and fluency in administrative, accounting, and management systems with a demonstrated ability to mentor staff in these areas
  • Experience writing proposal or report sections of at least 10 pages
  • Demonstrated leadership on a project management team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad for extended periods, including fragile and conflict environments; experience living or working in developing countries preferred
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Foreign language proficiency preferred
