Promoting Community-Based Natural Resource Management and Livelihoods in Zambia

To promote community-based natural resource management and conservation, Chemonics analyzed the obstacles and opportunities for increasing incomes and promoting sustainable resource use in the nine protected game management areas surrounding the park.

Chemonics worked with the Millennium Challenge Corporation to conduct a six-month in-depth study to analyze issues related to community-based natural resource management and legislative reform, livelihood strategies, land use and land tenure, education and training, threats to biodiversity, traditional systems of authority, and gender dynamics in nine game management areas surrounding Kafue National Park in Zambia.

Chemonics provided recommendations for viable sustainable economic development activities based on joint ventures between communities and the private sector to develop tourism enterprises and promote alternative livelihoods.

This study involved fieldwork in the game management areas and used participatory data collection methods such as key informant interviews, community interviews, and focus groups.

Project Duration: 2011 - 2012
