In October, the EU Standing Committee on Organic Farming voted to accept the procedures and a list of approved certification bodies. The list includes 30 certification bodies that have standards and certification deemed equivalent with EU regulation. The undertaking to compile a list of certification bodies that are equivalent with the EU Regulation was a huge step forward in making the world of organic certification and trade easier, smoother, more equitable.
Organizations around the world were eligible to become certification bodies, making it easier for producers certified by bodies based in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America to export organic produce into the European Union.
Organska Kontrola is the only certification body from the Balkans that is authorized to issue organic certificates to producers interested in exporting to the high-value EU market. Since 2009, USAID and Chemonics have worked with Organska Kontrola, providing technical support and bringing in international experts in international accreditation and obtaining EU recognition. Organska Kontrola also received a grant to maintain international accreditation, as well as direct technical support to continuously improve internal quality management systems.
Before the project, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency was the key organization that supported establishment and international recognition of Organska Kontrola. This project is jointly funded by USAID and the Swedish agency.
